City News Now with the City of Yuma

City News Now runs Thursdays 6 to 9 a.m. on KBLU 560 AM.

The City of Yuma sponsors and hosts City News Now, a "talk radio for Yuma" program for the benefit of city residents. A typical 7 to 8 a.m. hour of the program features city staff members who come in to talk about the range and quality of the services they provide among functions that Yuma residents have expressed they want their city government to provide for them:

· police and fire protection

· street maintenance and construction

· water and sewer service

· community development/planning and zoning issues

· solid waste disposal

· parks and recreation

· neighborhood services,

· municipal court

· traffic signals and street lights

From 8 to 9 a.m., guests typically include a member of the Yuma City Council along with City Administrator Mark Watson. It’s a rare opportunity for residents to voice their issues or ask questions directly to both their local council member and to the administrator in charge of City staff.

City News Now also provides information that you need to know each week, such as where expected road and street construction projects are, when trash will be picked up on holiday weeks, and what sports, recreational events and arts and culture events are taking place in the upcoming days.

City News Now is hosted by:

--Greg Hyland, the Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the City of Yuma. With decades of experience in Yuma city government, Greg is an encyclopedic resource of Yuma and how things work. Greg also has experience representing Yuma on the national level as the President of an international association of public managers. Callers frequently pick his brain on topics such as “how did that ugly building get there?” to “why isn’t there a street light on this block?” As Greg says, if he can’t give the answer right away, he’ll find it and get back with you.

--Dave Nash, Public Affairs Coordinator for the City of Yuma. Dave worked 10 years in local media before joining the City staff in mid-2007, so he understands the need to communicate clearly and concisely – with fun, where appropriate – to the radio audience. He prepares the current events segments at the top of each hour’s broadcast, and hosts the Road Report, Parks and Recreation Update and “What’s Going On in Yuma” segments of the show. Dave also hosts the programs “City Outlook” and “City News” for the City’s government cable channel, City 73, and brings that experience to guest interviews.

--Chuck Nordquist, Public Affairs Specialist for the City of Yuma. With a long, storied and varied background that includes work in radio, film, photography and public relations, Chuck is not only a skilled interviewer of City News Now guests, but also the one who provides color and entertainment to each broadcast. Whether it’s his issues with cats, his relationship with donuts, his attempts to get plugs for his Rotary club over the air or his interesting and unique personal perspective, Chuck adds an element of unpredictability that makes each show unique and entertaining as well as informative.

“The City is proud of its affiliation with KBLU, the Yuma market leader in News/Talk programming. Across the United States, it’s a rare thing where a municipal government has the opportunity to host a talk radio program where it can speak directly with its citizens. We hope the residents of Yuma will continue to take advantage of this opportunity to seek information, ask questions and share concerns directly with the people who can help them, or help them understand how their issue fits into the overall big picture.”
--City Administrator Mark Watson
