SOMERTON — YUHSD Governing Board has been accepting a donation in the amount of $21,879.25 from Somerton Education, Inc. during the Feb. 8, 2023 monthly meeting.
The funds will be used to purchase athletic equipment for Somerton High School, which is slated to open in the fall. SHS Principal Lucky Arvizo was on-hand at the meeting to accept the donation.
“We work with Mr. Arvizo and we are so happy that he’s our principal at Somerton High School,” Somerton Education, Inc. Treasurer Lorena Delgadillo said. “We would like to submit to Yuma Union High School District our first large donation. In working with Mr. Arvizo, we have agreed to furnish the football equipment, but this is not the end of it. We are working really hard and we want to thank our community and the Yuma County community for always supporting our vision.”
The education committee raised funds through individual donations and fundraisers, including hosting the annual Corn Festival on Main Street in Somerton.
Construction on Somerton High School started in November 2021 with an expected completion timeline of June 2023. The first freshman class will set foot on the campus on Aug. 3, 2023.
“There’s continued great excitement about the opening of the school,” Arvizo said. “There’s also continued great support. The Somerton Education, Inc. committee has been instrumental in fundraising and getting sponsors for extracurricular activities and athletics for our future students, our future Toros.”
